One of the easiest ways to understand the balance of variegation in a variegated plant is by looking at the candy cane stem. This pattern - green and white along the stem - gives you clues about how stable the variegation is and what future leaves might look like. A nicely balanced “candy cane” usually means a healthy mix of chlorophyll-rich tissue (for energy) and variegated tissue (for those bright patches we love).
